Broad beans and purple beans in succession. We aim to use the purple beans as shade each year on the west side of the house. On the far left is mallow, a weed I’m cultivating to eat.

Alpine strawberry, kaffir lime, ladybirds, blackberries, green beans (just planted out).

I’ve been looking for the alpine strawberries for years – these were from seed and are white when ripe. We had these when I was little and the tase really takes me back!

Beans are not just for eating – they will be a green curtain this summer to protect us from the afternoon sun. More on them later.
